Beaver Stadium and Penn State vs Northwestern College Football Game.

The final stop on my Pennsylvania trip was to see the Penn State Nittany Lions college football team take on Northwestern Wildcats at Beaver Stadium. The stadium is the second largest stadium in the Western Hemisphere with a capacity of 106,572. Unfortunately there was only 95,769 fans at this game so it didn't get to break the 100,000 mark.

As you can see the student section in white with the red S really gets into the spirit of the game. The game was very exciting with the home team Lions going onto win 39-28.

Fall Foliage in Pennsylvania.

Every year the North Eastern United States features amazing fall foliage across the area. From late September to Early November amazing colours can be seen as the leaves change their colour before dropping their leaves for Winter. The green country side is peppered with amazing bursts of reds, yellows and oranges. It is a must do day trip from any of the major cities in the North East.

The Duquesne Incline railroad and the Mount Washington views over Pittsburgh.

The Duquesne Incline is a funicular that connects the South Side neighbourhood near the start of the Ohio River up to the top of Mt Washington. The Incline was opened in 1877 and travels up the slope of the mountain at a 30degree angle.

 

From the viewing platform at the top are the best views of Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle and the Three Rivers. It only costs $5 for a return trip and is a short walk from Downtown Pittsburgh. 

Installation Art at the Mattress Factory

The Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh is a museum that is one of the best in the world for installation art pieces. The museum is spaced over two buildings and over 3 levels. A great two room work involved mirrored rooms with one in ultraviolet lights and the other with normal lighting both using spots. 

One level featured a completely dark experience with different rooms using darkness and light to create images that seem different in their dimensions as shown in the final photo. I had never seen anything like that and was truly impressed.

Heinz Field and the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL team

By chance I was walking past Heinz Stadium at 9 45am when I noticed a sign about a stadium tour starting at 10am. The tour was great value at only $8 and allowed you to visit the field level, team locker rooms, suites and press areas.

There is also a large amount of memorabilia on display including all of the Super Bowl trophies that the team had won in the past. The tour is well worth a visit for any sport or Pittsburgh fan.

Pittsburgh and the final Australian Abroad trip for 2012 in the USA.

With only a week to go until I moved to Paris I spent a few nights in Pennsylvania going to Pittsburgh and State College. The first stop was Pittsburgh, affectionately known as Steel City. Pittsburgh throughout America’s history was the centre for steel production for the United States. You can still see the effect it has had on the city with many steel bridges, railway lines and old buildings warehouses and factories.

 

I started the day in the historic Strip District. This area was previously home to and is now a key tourist and party area. The city has a strong following to its professional sports teams, especially the Steelers NFL team.

With the city’s strategic position on the corner of the Three Rivers, the city has amazing views of the skyline and river from many locations.  It is a beautiful city and one that I would definitely like to visit again.
